Summer holidays at e-Jan Networks
September usually marks the beginning of fall, but here in Tokyo warm, summery days linger into the latter half of the month. This year’s summer seems particularly long, not only reflective in the temperature but also in e-Jan’s summer holiday system.
In Japan, summer holidays are often timed to coincide with Obon, a major holiday in mid-August during which many people travel to visit family. As such, Japanese companies that offer summer holidays will often do so around Obon.
While many people at e-Jan Networks took their holiday in mid-August to coincide with both Obon and also Mountain Day (on the 11th), a number of people opted not to. This was made possible because e-Jan Network’s holiday time distribution system for this year was relatively loosely-structured: 5 consecutive days at any time between July through September to be negotiated within each group.
This system not only gave employees the flexibility to choose their own holiday times, but also allowed departments to stagger vacation time so no one group was understaffed. The long break allowed for employees to potentially travel overseas, or to visit family outside of Tokyo.
The wide range of time to claim their extended holiday seems to have been beneficial to many, with some even claiming their holidays now. Though a bit tongue-in-cheek, one can say that for some here at e-Jan, summer hasn’t quite ended. But of course the seasons carry on, and the change of seasons bring with their own enjoyment. There is much to look forward to in every season, after all.
