(New Years decorations)

Happy New Year!

This Working Japan blog will cover one aspect of Japan’s New Year traditions: ‘New Years decorations’.

New Years decorations are set up to welcome in the new year.
There are many different kinds, but this time I’ll be introducing two kinds.

New Years decorations at the entryway carry the meaning of ‘welcoming the Toshigami (Shinto deity of the year) into the home and/or workplace to ensure a good year’.
It is a symbol to show that the house has been prepared for the Toshigami to enter.

(Shimekazari):
A decoration for the top of the entryway.
This garland of braided rice straw can be accessorised with other ornamentations.

門松 (Kadomatsu):
This decoration is displayed on either side of an entryway.
Pine branches are set up, and can be ornamented in various ways.
There is often bamboo along with the pine, but the pine is the crucial element.

Around this time of year, these decorations can be spotted all around town, everywhere in Japan.
The above photos were taken in the area surrounding the e-Jan office.
However, compared to when I was a child, there are fewer homes and offices that display New Years decorations.

The photo below is of the shimekazari on the e-Jan Networks office door (on the upper right).
Isn’t it simple and tasteful?
